1. In Karachi, Pakistan, Benazir Bhutto was born on June 21, 1953. Her name means “one without equal.”
2. To her mates, Bhutto was known as Pinkie, a childhood nickname her family gave her because she was an unusually pink girl.
3. In Pakistan, she attended Catholic schools. She entered Radcliffe College at Harvard University at age 16 and received a cum laude degree in comparative government in 1973. She was the first Asian woman to be elected president of the Oxford Union at Oxford University.
4. The founder of the Pakistan People’s Party was her father, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.
5. When Bhutto returned from exile in Britain to Pakistan in 1986, she was greeted by such huge crowds that it took her motorcade 91⁄2 hours to drive 8 miles from the airport to the Lahore rally venue.

6. Bhutto was married to Asif Ali Ardari, a wealthy businessman, on Dec. 18, 1987.
7. The first woman ever elected to rule a Muslim country was Bhutto in 1988.
8. Bhutto once said that her role model was former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Britain’s “Iron Lady,” but noted: “As a Muslim woman, because she was a working woman, I have great respect for Khadija, the wife of the prophet of Islam.”
9. Following the death of her father, her family was repeatedly put under house arrest. In the summer of 1981, the government at the time eventually incarcerated her in solitary confinement in a desert cell in Sindh.
10. In Rawalpindi, the city in which her father was hanged in 1979, Bhutto was murdered.
