The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has blocked TikTok, the video-sharing App, on Friday due to “immoral and indecent” content shown through the App.

According to a statement released in the press by the PTA there were many “complaints” about the nature of content that was regularly being posted on TikTok, therefore PTA has issued a “final notice” to the App today.

PTA’s press release further said that TikTok was provided with considerable time to comply with instructions and effectively moderate its unlawful content being displayed by it.

But since it failed to comply with the government instructions fully, therefore, strict instructions were issued to block the TikTok application in Pakistan,” the statement clarified further.

The PTA has also informed TikTok that the authority is open to any further engagement regarding the matter. It may review its decision once the App finds a “satisfactory mechanism” to moderate its unlawful content.

As the  news of the ban broke out, Tik-Tok began to display a blank screen without any text or any images loading. Even the “For You” section was empty, with only a black screen appearing before the users.

The “Discover” feature, the “Users” tab, the “Top”, “Videos”, “Sounds,” and “Hashtags” tabs all had failed to load.

TikTok’s response:

While responding to the ban, the company claimed that the company has a commitment to abide by the laws where it is providing its services and that it is in regular communication with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority and will continue to work with them in this regard. The company’s statement further highlighted that its top priority is to “maintain a positive and safe in-app environment”.

We have strict measures to help us ensure a safe and welcoming environment for our users, including mechanisms for reporting contents that violate our terms of using complete Community Guidelines that are available in Urdu also,” the company statement added.
