What is Lockdown or “Smart Lockdown”?

Lockdown is anything but a specialized term used by health officials, referring to anything from required geographic isolation to non-required suggestions to stay at home, prohibition of gatherings and events or shutting of particular type of business. That usually results in many crises such as health or financial crisis.

Smart Lockdown?

Luckily, we have an alternative to this known as ‘smart lockdown’ that can help ease the pressure on economy, individual and nationwide, without placing lives at risk. Mainly, the areas suffering from the epidemic are selectively closed in smart lockdown. The main purpose of smart lockdown is to give alleviation and reduce limitation to the middle and lower class to endure monetarily alongside fighting off the infection.

Lockdown in Middle East Countries

As in Pakistan, Italy, Spain, China, and many other countries during this Covid’19 outbreaks, the authorities have imposed the complete lockdown following smart lockdown helping the lower class to gain their normal work.

Undoubtedly, global pandemic has severely damaged the economy of developed countries. But the developing and underdeveloped countries such as Pakistan, India Bangladesh etc. have faced the several challenges. Thus, the prolonged lockdown made the survival of lower class very difficult.

So, on April 24, the government of Pakistan decided to ease the lockdown by practicing the patterns of western countries.

Smart lockdown has helped the economy to function efficiently under safety guidelines. People are allowed to step out in the city wearing masks and gloves. Almost all kind of markets are opened by strictly following the given SOPs by the government. This approach should be embraced not as another option however not withstanding all the epidemiological measures, cleanliness, distancing, tracing and isolating the ill.

Huge organizations ought to be permitted to proceed with conventions that they preannounce and maintain. But still, there are some business that are not of primary importance hence closed such as marriage halls. People are arranging small gatherings at their homes with only closed relatives. Well, in some aspect it is good as people don’t have to spend all their savings on their weddings. In Pakistan, Mosques are also opened but people are allowed to keep a distance of at least 1 foot. Restaurants may be opened for delivery or take away only. Locals shops are allowed to open by following clear protocols. Though it is risky, but government can’t keep the country shut for so long.

Recent research conducted in Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE), has revealed that regions of infected persons and their contacts can be tracked, identified and isolated for particular time by the process of smart lockdown.

It further added that it isn’t as though there will be no lockdown, however it should just track and isolate the virus. In Manga village, Mardan, they have successfully overcome the situation by implementing smart lockdown.

As no one knows for how long the epidemic would persist so, we cannot go for complete lockdown because of the poor segments and daily wagers of the society.

Thus, we have to choose smart lockdown for both the economy and individuals of the country.
