It’s been almost four years since Junaid Jamshed was killed in the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane crash that took place near Havelian in the hills. There were some startling details about the aircraft crash that killed Junaid Jamshed and 47 others.

PIA flight PK661 was going in the direction of Islamabad. However, it was unable to complete its trip for some reasons and sustained a crash. Forty-seven passengers lost their lives in the incident on December 7, 2016, along with Junaid Jamshed.

The Aircraft Accident Investigation Board of Pakistan (AAIB) was responsible for investigating the PIA aircraft accident near Havelian. The AAIB has now released its report on the inquiry. It kept the crash accountable to PIA engineers. The horrific details of the plane crash that killed Junaid Jamshed and 47 others are finally out now.

The report reported, “PIA Engineering dislodged / fractured PT-1 blade No 1 Engine after omission from the EMM (Non-Compliance of SB-21878).” This was during unscheduled engine maintenance in November 2016, in which the PT-1 blades met the replacement requirement, but were not replaced.

PIA Engineering reviewed the life of the PT-1 blades of the old design in February 2017. PIA Engineering wanted to shift the soft life to 10,000 hours of hard life. This was regardless of the situations in the maintenance manual.

The lack of competence and carelessness of the PIA is clear.

It is tragic that such horrific plane accidents have now become recurring PIA events. In May 2020, near Jinnah International Airport, a PIA aircraft flying from Lahore to Karachi crashed.

The 99-on-board airbus crashed into a residential area as it approached the airport. In the collision, two passengers survived.

The fact that the government should recognise the appalling state of the PIA is demonstrated by these tragic plane crash accidents. Fixing the situation is critical.

The key characteristics of PIA have been unreliable planes, reckless crew, and corruption, and weak customer service. This airline has made it from one of the best airlines in Europe to one of the worst in the world.
